I want to announce the recent publication of my 14th book, Neurodiversity: Discovering the Extraordinary Gifts of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Brain Differences. Instead of focusing on the deficits, which most educators and parents do, I thought it would be interesting to examine the assets, since it seemed like if a student was having difficulty in school, they would need to be surrounded by adults who see the best in them, not the worst. Hey, friends. I'm going to be traveling to Birmingham, AL, New Orleans, St. Louis and Washington DC in October and November. If you live in one of those areas, I'd love to talk with you about my "availability" during those windows of time. The Literacy Ambassador (that's me) loves to book extra events with schools, preschools, parents and parent groups, community nonprofits and family-friendly agencies whenever I'm in the neighborhood and I can offer discounted bookings for such events! Hope to hear from you!

One of the best artists I know for emergent literacy is Fran Avni. Her CDs Little Ears and Rhythm and Rhyme Time are two of my favorites. Also wanted to give you all a heads up that www.inspiringteachers.com (the publisher of my new eBook on using picture books to teach content area concepts) is having a sale too (25-30% off her inventory).

The day has finally come. My first ebook is for sale on Lulu for $5. Just click on the following link to my blog and click on the link for the book. If my book doesn't appear at the top of the page, return to the blog and try again.

Anyone who purchases the book in JULY gets a 10% discount. Just click “Buy” and enter code ‘JULYCONTEST10’ at checkout.

This book inspires movement as children learn about the days of the week. The lyrical rhymes also teach them how to spell each day! The activities at the end of the book are designed to reinforce the concepts as well as give impetus to movement exploration.

Some of you may have already received e-mail from me on the subject of Facebook, so if you have, sorry for the repeat. I have set up a page on Facebook -- Advocates of Music and Movement in the Lives of Children. Several of you have joined; thank you. We hope that through this group we can network and share together. Please consider joining. If you've already joined, please post your upcoming events so those of us who live near where you will be, can promote you.

Would also like to let you know that I have a few new titles out, some for the older children ie "Multiplication Moves" and "Divide and Conquer Math". On the advice of Jean Blaydes Madigan, I've also produced a multilingual CD -- "Everybody Speaks Music". Please give a listen at my website which is listed below. If you'd like to use any of the music in your workshops, please consider this my permission to do so. Sharing is good :}

Let's try to stay in touch and keep our messages out there!

I just learned the most interesting thing about this in a PBS documentary about the senses. In the evolution of the vertbrate brain, the vestibular sense came first. Hearing was a further development of balance, not the other way around.

The series is called Human Senses.

The vestibular system is that part of your brain that is connected through the inner ear to every muscle in your body!! It regulates your sense of balance which is important for reading ability. Rae Pica has a lot of information on this subject as does Carla Hannaford. This is why movement is so important for our little ones, much more important than sitting down and learning numbers and letters. For preschoolers, its all about the vestibular development. Without it, the foundation for learning is hindered.

Hi, sounds marvelous - what is a vestibular system?

I'd like to add a comment to what Janet is saying. I have taught in preschools in Australia for 30 years and about 6 or 7 years ago found Janet and Wendy, from Kids Music Company, at a conference. I was totally blown away by their music. It just all made sense. There were songs for circle dances, echo singing, songs for instrument playing, partner songs, moving around the room songs etc. Now they have moved in a different direction, and the latest CDs cover all different areas of essential learning for young children, including songs for the vestibular system. These songs are so much fun, and children learn and do so much with the songs while enjoying themselves. At the same time, they are doing all these really important activities including balancing, tilting, rolling, eye tracking etc.
I just LOVED this music so much, that Janet and Wendy asked me to work for them. Wow! I was blown away by that, and of course said yes.
Janet is not trying to blow her own trumpet when she asks you if you have listened to their music. It really is fantastic.
I now run Kids Music Company in Australia, and am in the Unique position of being able to rave on about the music simply because I didn't write it myself.
If you are in Australia, you can buy from my website kidsmusic.com.au
Okay, I'll get back into my little box now. LOL

Hi Mar, (love your logo on your site)
Your Maths songs sound fab. Certainly, kids will remember their tables with a funky accompaniment! Have you had a listen to our music? www.kidsmusic.co.nz
