Elkind will be the keynote? He is an amazing thinker, and a deeply caring professional about children. Be ready! He believes in letting children be children. I'd love to be there. You are so fortunate to hear him in person! MaryAnn Kohl www.brightri

Cara, many Kindergartens of today are like the 1st grades some of us were in. Developmentally appropriate practice gets left at the door when entering most public schools. It's as if K+ grades are simply preparatory work for more academics and the b…

Everyone should read The Hurried Child: Growing Up Too Fast Too Soon ( 9780738204413) by David Elkind, Ph.D. The book gives you perspective on the long range effects as children grow up, and their early beginnings and development. This is not about…

I agree with Carol the Kindergarten curriclum has changed over the last decade and it's not designed with the best interest of the children it serves, 4 and 5 year olds. Meeting the state standards instead of meeting the needs of the children has be…

I am all with Lenore!!! I have often thought about this - and I always talk to my children about how many good people there are in the world. I always point out all the helpers, rescuers, heros in our society who help strangers every day. When I am…

Great "success" story! I hope other parents will follow your lead and let their children spend more time just "be-ing."

I agree that children need more time to just be. My son and I spent the whole summer just be-ing. In first grade, the teacher always said he was unable to focus. Now, in second grade, after a summer of swimming in kiddie pools and bike riding around…

Although Beth makes some great points - I don't agree it is a mistake to hold your child back! If kindergarten teachers/principals were ready to create truly developmentally appropriate programs to serve 4-5 year olds, I'd love to agree with her. Wh…

Right on, Carol! I congratulate you and your husband for your wisdom! And you're most likely correct that your boys' physical skills may be surpassing those of children enrolled in organized sports. What most parents don't realize is that, in many…

I am happy to see the latest discussion about Sports starting WAY TOO YOUNG!!! My husband and I have been putting this off (covering our boys eyes when we pass the soccer field -just joking!) But honestly, with two boys we are very reluctant to give…

How is your article going? I am writing a letter to the editor and telling all the parents in our district about "The Crisis In The Kindergarten Report". I am also sending a copy to the superintendent and principal in my district. There's been lots…

I think it would be nice if teachers sent home a letter talking about the importance of taking walks, hanging out in the back yard, catching frogs in the creek and reading great literature together. I hope teacher are not assigning summer activities…
