Engaging Families in Their Children's Literacy Development - It's Different Than You Think

I'm starting a revolution: turning away from finger wagging "you should do this with your child" to understanding that every family has literacy in some form and celebrating that. For years, schools have befriended the PTA moms (and we know how necessary they are) but offered little time or energy for less engaged families.

That is largely because teachers don't receive any training on encouraging families to be a part of their children's literacy growth. In fact, teachers are promoted as the s… Continue

I still haven't figured out how to let the blog automatically post so I'm doing a "manual" here. I'm going to try to do it this way now, just going into edit and seeing if it will pick up the most recent post. Anyone have other ideas on getting the most recent additions to post without me doing this all the time? Here's the link: http://parentsandkidsreadingtogether.blogspot.com. This one is for parents of teens!

Cathy,

Thanks for the link for my project. The project went very well. Eventhough your link didn't come in time for the project, I was eager to enrich my own knowledge. Thanks!!

What a great resource you would be with our high school students! Even though I run a preschool, I am primarily a high school teacher (our district has 6 of these programs) and there is always that focus on raising test scores in reading. We do love our Dr. Seuss books, and I will look into Peggy Rathmann. Will you be in Wash DC for the NAEYC conference in November? I will! Thanks for your response!

I was looking at your e-book on using picture books. What age group is this targeted to? I have high school students in my class, but they are the 'teachers' in our in-house preschool. Is your book something they could use for their preschool lessons? Thanks!
