Maybe the next time you try this you can add "What do frogs say?" "Riv-It" or "Honk" or "Croak Croak." See which one is easy for them to say!! I think they may be too young, but you could try the game "Five Little Frogs Sitting on a Log" which is a…

Music & the brain

I've read about this kind of research before, connected with how people "audiate" music. Edwin Gordon's research on children's musical development was the basis for some of my classes in Music & Movement at Nova. He said that the amount, variety, & complexity of music heard in infancy and early childhood predicts later musical aptitude, not to mention enjoyment! Brain research has shown that people hearing music with parts left out will "fill in" what is left, if they know the music (no… Continue

Play redux

We woke up to snow this morning and preschool was delayed an hour, but there was no way we would miss out on playing in the snow. Now we live in Northeren Virginia, where people consider any snow an obstacle to driving, so we only had 10 in the class. But I'd notified parents ahead of time that my classroom (none of the others do this) goes outside in the snow and if children do not have boots, they stay in and ride bikes. My assistant stays in and I go out with the children. Well, no one wants… Continue

Washington Post Highlights Play-based learning

This morning's Metro section's lead article discusses the "debate over the value of make-believe". They quote Judy Apostolico-Buck, my 27year old daughter's first grade teacher, and now coordinator of Arlington County Public School's early childhood education program. Sounds like Arlington is doing the right thing. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/20/AR2009112002391.html

Hey Gail. I wanted to check something with you privately. The two students that submitted an activity don't have much movement. Sherry has the kids drawing to different music and Wilhemina has a simple fingerplay activity. They both work on small muscle development. do you want me to encourage some large motor movement too?

Hi Gail - sorry to be a dunderhead, but when I checked on the Bam group for the NVCC group, I see stuff for Groups 2,3,4 - but nothing for Group 1, that you assigned me to? Is that correct?
