Profile Information

Professional Interests
My background is in physical education, dance education and early childhood education. I've taught for over 35 years. Recently I started writing freelance articles and children's books. I'm very excited to announce that Action Alley Education is close to publishing, "Moving Through All Seven Days." This book inspires movement as children learn about the days of the week. The lyrical rhymes also teach them how to spell each day! The activities at the end of the book are designed to reinforce the concepts as well as give impetus to movement exploration.
About Me:
I have a B.S. from Southern Connecticut State University and Covenant Life Seminary, as well as graduate coursework from New York Institute of Technology and Columbia University. Hanging my hat in the North Georgia mountains I have been a dancer, choreographer, teacher, tutor, writer and an antiques dealer for many years. As a freelance writer, I have published several articles on the web and in magazines. My first children's book entitled, "Trouble on Earth Day," is coming out in 2009! Some of my past experiences include teaching in public and private schools as well as writing research papers, plays and musicals.

Gryphon House Is Publishing My Activities!

I'm soooo excited. Things are finally starting to work out. Gryphon House is publishing 4 of my teacher activities in their Learn Everyday Series in the fall of 2010. Everything takes soooo long in the publishing business.
I just signed a contract with Guardian Angel Publishers for my picture book, Sh, Sh, Sh, Will the Baby Sleep?

Have a fantastic day! Kathy Stemke

MATH AND MOVEMENT by Kathy Ann Stemke

Pre-school and elementary school age children are eager to learn math skills at home with the right fun activities. Coming from an elementary, as well as physical education background, I not only use conventional math games, but I also use math games that involve large motor skills. Your children can jump and hop as they learn math. Young children love to move, so when you combine math and movement, you are sure to have a winner!

BEACH BALL MATH requires you to section off a ball into many squa… Continue

Your welcome, Gail. I really enjoyed the experience and would love to participate again in the future. Are you signed up for my free monthly newsletter? Could you look at this month's copy and give a short review that I could use on my website? Please mention your teaching position. If you don't have time, I'd understand. Thanks, Kathy, for all of your good feedback to my students. I'm really happy with how the assignment went. Hope to meet you some time!

Yes, please. Movement activities normally mean large motor skills. Maybe I'll send them a group email just to make sure they understand. The chapter on physical development is on everything, and I forget they didn't all take my music & movement class. Thanks!

Thanks, I'd love an invite. I loved your interview on book bites. You seem to be doing a great job at marketing yourself. Wish I had that talent.

Kathy,
I see you are a member of the book marketing network. Do you mind telling me how you like that site and is it working for you?
I have also written some books and need to really work on the marketing piece

Hey Kathy
Sure...would be honoured to do this for you. I have this philosophy when teaching to only teach one thinking task at once, and i teach teachers to identify the leanring outcome. ie...if they are wanting the child to develop skipping, just practice skipping - dont have them count or skip round a triangle until they have skipping sorted. Doing more than one thinking task is impossible, even as an adult. So kids need to practise a skill over and over for it to come to the point where they no longer think about it otherwise neither outcome is achieved satisfactorily. You get what i mean? So developing fundamental movement skills requires lots of practise and a book like yours no doubt promotes developing these skills while doing curriculum based activities. Anything that involves practise is great, so yes, i would love to do this for you. How are we going to organise that?

Hi Kathy Are your books for preschool or school aged children. Am all for encompassing language and the curriculum and learning through movement and experience. I just wonder if it is necessary for young children to be involved in "writing" activities - Mainly because over here we dont emphsise the child writing until children have foundation skills in place for writing. In other words approach numeracy and literacy in a less formal, more hands on way. Is that what you are hoping to achieve with your resources?
