Working in the early childhood field, I find a plethora of views regarding "best teaching" with young children. This year has allowed me to reflect on the values that I truly hold dear when working with our littlest clients. I'm not sure how to get the word out to parents and peers that early childhood is disappearing. It seems to be fading into a distant past. In the rush to hurry up and teach them standards so that they can all be equal, we've forgotten that learning is not imposed but natural…

Our book,
No Monster Here was published on November 1, 2009. Alyssa Thomas, our daughter in law did the fantastic illustrations and I wrote the story, Since we wanted to create a great book, we formed our own publishing company, Fluglefluff Productions. We choose to have the book made in the United States. The book was designed by Alyssa and Jon Thomas, at Studio Collective, their graphic design firm and they were there for the printing.
Since publication, we h

Are the

Hi,
I live in Herndon with my three sons who are 8, 9, and 17.
I have a BA in art history. I have worked in Montessori schools since 2003 in infant and toddler rooms. I am studying to earn an AAS degree in Early Childhood Development. I am also interested in special education and may eventually become a special ed teacher or a therapist. I am taking a Montessori Infant/Toddler training course.

I've read about this kind of research before, connected with how people "audiate" music. Edwin Gordon's research on children's musical development was the basis for some of my classes in Music & Movement at Nova. He said that the amount, variety, & complexity of music heard in infancy and early childhood predicts later musical aptitude, not to mention enjoyment! Brain research has shown that people hearing music with parts left out will "fill in" what is left, if they know the music (no…

We woke up to snow this morning and preschool was delayed an hour, but there was no way we would miss out on playing in the snow. Now we live in Northeren Virginia, where people consider any snow an obstacle to driving, so we only had 10 in the class. But I'd notified parents ahead of time that my classroom (none of the others do this) goes outside in the snow and if children do not have boots, they stay in and ride bikes. My assistant stays in and I go out with the children. Well, no one wants…

Take a look at how a new playground takes shape, with help from students who were invited to take part in the design process. Full story is
at Edutopia. This is another successful community build organized by KaBOOM, a nonprofit that advocates for great places to play for all our kids.

When taking a group of kids on a field trip, is it a good idea to have some sort of
Travel Medical Insurance for the kids that don't have
Health Insurance. The

If you are a newfangled teacher, chances are you are still ideal and still expectant that the learning environment will always work to your favour. But after a while, you will realise that there are elements or factors that goes way out of your control. You are now exposed to a larger scale of truth as opposed when you were in college learning about the field. If you are, on the contrary, an educator who is considered senior in the field, the dilemma could be that you can not adjust in today's fa…

This morning's Metro section's lead article discusses the "debate over the value of make-believe". They quote Judy Apostolico-Buck, my 27year old daughter's first grade teacher, and now coordinator of Arlington County Public School's early childhood education program. Sounds like Arlington is doing the right thing.

I'm starting a revolution: turning away from finger wagging "you should do this with your child" to understanding that every family has literacy in some form and celebrating that. For years, schools have befriended the PTA moms (and we know how necessary they are) but offered little time or energy for less engaged families.
That is largely because teachers don't receive any training on encouraging families to be a part of their children's literacy growth. In fact, teachers are promoted as the s…

I'm soooo excited. Things are finally starting to work out.
Gryphon House is publishing 4 of my teacher activities in their

I still haven't figured out how to let the blog automatically post so I'm doing a "manual" here. I'm going to try to do it this way now, just going into edit and seeing if it will pick up the most recent post. Anyone have other ideas on getting the most recent additions to post without me doing this all the time? Here's the link: http://parentsandkidsreadingtogether.blogspot.com. This one is for parents of teens!
